๐ 1 Samuel 26 Summary : ๐ Saul calls out "My son!" and asks to return — What is the truth behind it?
Saul cries out: "My son David, return!" — What is his true motive?
• The wise Abigail becomes David’s wife,
• While Michal, David's actual wife, is given away by Saul to another man, creating an ironic situation.
1️⃣ Who are the Ziphites?
1 Samuel 26:1 opens with the Ziphites informing Saul about David's whereabouts once again.
The Ziphites had previously betrayed David in Chapter 23 by reporting his hiding place to Saul, for which Saul blessed them.
"The Lord bless you for showing me compassion... Go and make further preparation. Find out where David usually goes and who has seen him there... Then come back to me with sure information."
(1 Samuel 23:21–23)
➔ Afterwards, in the cave of En Gedi, David spared Saul's life and let him go in peace.
2️⃣ Saul’s Repeated Pursuit, David’s Repeated Mercy
Just like at En Gedi, Saul takes 3,000 elite soldiers of Israel to hunt David down. At night, David and Abishai slip into Saul's camp while everyone is asleep.
- ⚔️ Abishai's Proposal: "Today God has delivered your enemy into your hands..." and offers to pin Saul to the ground with one spear thrust.
- ๐ก️ David's Restraint: Just as before, he stops him saying, "Don't destroy him! Who can lay a hand on the Lord's anointed and be guiltless?"
3️⃣ Leaving the Camp and Rebuking Abner
David takes only the spear and water jug near Saul’s head and quietly leaves the camp.
๐ How could they safely enter and leave the middle of an army?
"Because the Lord had put them into a deep sleep; they were all asleep." (v. 12)
Standing on top of a hill far away, David calls out and sternly rebukes Abner, the commander of Saul's army.
- "Why didn't you guard your lord the king? You deserve to die!"
- Saul recognizes David's voice, confesses his wrongdoing, and calls out: (v. 21)
"Come back, David my son! Because you considered my life precious today, I will not try to harm you again. Surely I have acted like a fool and have been terribly wrong."
4️⃣ "Come back, David my son!" Was it genuine?
- Suddenly changing his address to "David my son"... is an obvious manipulative tactic.
- His plea to "come back" looks like nothing more than a trap and a lure.
David's Wise Response:
David does not go directly to Saul; instead, he asks one of his young men to fetch Saul’s spear and water jug. He never falls for Saul’s sweet talk. ๐
David declares that the Lord rewards everyone for their righteousness and faithfulness, praying that God deliver him from all trouble. Saul then speaks his final words:
"May you be blessed, David my son; you will do great things and surely triumph."
We must look at what Saul did right in Chapter 25. Saul gave Michal, David's wife, to another man.
In other words, David is no longer Saul's son (son-in-law). ❌
Yet in Chapter 26, Saul repeats the phrase "my son" twice. If David had returned to Saul's hypocritical embrace, what would have happened? I leave that to your imagination.
Scripture records Saul's subtle actions to provide brilliant clues. Throughout Chapter 25, while all Israel mourns Samuel's death, Saul is nowhere to be seen, only appearing at the very end to do something outrageous (giving Michal away).
The final verse of 1 Samuel 26 (v. 25) concludes with a very meaningful statement:
"Then Saul said to David, 'May you be blessed, David my son; you will do great things and surely triumph.' So David went on his way, and Saul returned home." (1 Samuel 26:25)
- They did not reconcile,
- David did not return to Saul's house,
- And their relationship was not restored in any way.
As if nothing was resolved, David simply went on his way, and Saul returned to his place — returning right back to square one.
